Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980136917

I think we have a good compromise. Let me mention that package very briefly. We put in $25 million for education for the handicapped. $10 million for vocational rehabilitation. $30 million for grants to schools with a substantial number of immigrants. $5 million for college work study. $5 million for supplemental educational opportunity grants. $10 million for community health centers. $1.7 million for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. $2 million for Gallaudet College. and $10 million for emergency food and shelter. The package totals $98.7 million. Without the strong negotiation. and the persuasive abilities of the gentleman from Mississippi. our good chairman . and the gentleman from Kentucky . the likely outcome would have been no funding for these programs.
