Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980106355

One of the foreign aid priorities for which we both try to provide adequate funding is in the area of medical needs. including humanitarian relief aid. JoHN PORTER recently demonstrated this commitment in a much more personal and direct way that involved the resources of American free enterprise. In late August. when we were visiting an Afghan refugee camp at the PakistanAfghanistan border. we encountered thousands of refugees in need of medical assistance. One of the worst problems was the lack of antituberculosis medication. John "just happened to have" with him several boxes of antituberculosis medication provided to him by the Merrell Dow Pharmaceutical Co. to present to the camp authorities in Peshawar.
