Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980098971

I just came to the floor and became aware of the discussion. I have some familiarity with the Immigration Act as well as the Refugee Act. What provisions of the act is the Senator talking about? There are absolutely no provisions in the Refugee Act which provide that anyone who is permitted to remain in the United States under extended voluntary departure status because of the threat of violence in their home country. could bring their families to the United States. There is no provision that they could receive the social service programs which the Senator has referred toonly the refugees admitted under the Refugee Act are eligible.
