Mr. President. today. Senator HUDDLESTON and myself are introducing a constitutional amendment declaring English to be the official language of the United States of America. This amendment will redefine that which is already a political and social reality and will clarify the mixed signals this country has provided to immigrants and minority groups. From the beginning. English has been used as the official language of government. more or less as a matter or course. Requests for the official use of other languages have been consistently rejected. Congress. in the 1790s. 1840s and 1860s specifically declined to publish German versions of public documents.
