Mr. Speaker. many of us have grave reservations over the Immigration Reform and Control Act as passed recently by the other body. and the House Judiciary Committee will shortly be considering its version of this legislation. H.R. 6514. Today. I am introducting an alternative to the amnesty provision contained in H.R. 6514. in the form of a registry date amendment. Our proposal would simply amend existing law by updating current methods for granting legal status to certain types of deserving illegal immigrants. and allow permanent residence for illegal aliens who entered the country prior to January 1. 1973. Should H.R. 6514 be brought to the floor of the House prior to consideration of our alternative. we will be prepared to offer our alternative as an amendment to H.R. 6514. I urge my colleagues to join us in cosponsoring this more reasonable alternative.
