Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970225601

To say that businessmen are going to deliberately break the law is to insult them. In fact. though the chamber has come out against employer sanctions. both the Business Roundtable and the National Association of Manufacturers are supportive of these provisions. In addition. the Alliance for Immigration Reform. a group made up of large corporations such as Xerox. NCR. Ford. and Caterpillar. has been actively lobbying in favor of the bill. That group has certain reservations about the bill in the areas of foreign students and independent immigrants. therefore it is not a blanket endorsement. It should be pointed out that not all chambers oppose this legislation. For example. the San Diego and Houston chambers. both of which are areas heavily dependent on illegal labor. support employer sanctions.
