Apparently. many of my colleagues are ready to vote to require that every American be authorized by his or her Government to work. What more is there that a "Big Brother" government can do to obtain control over every citizen and resident of the United States? My distinguished colleagues on the Judiciary Committee argue that the work permit system will never be used for law enforcement purposes other than enforcement of the immigration laws. I accept those assurances at face value. But the Senators who make them today may not be here to defend against some future effort by the Government to use ID cards for nefarious purposes.
