Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970219085

If we fail to defend freedom in El Salvador and in Central America. we are going to have inmigration problems in this country that will be unimaginable when compared to anything we have had in the past. There is no question about it. in my judgment. If we apply the rule of 10 percent. we will be talking about at least 10 million immigrants walking through Central America and across that 2.100mile unmanned border with Mexico. There are already a half million El Salvadorans in the United States. If the efforts of the government in power there now to defend freedom should fail and the efforts we are making should fail. then I think we could probably anticipate seeing not next year. not 5 years from now. but immediately. another half million in the United States. and there are problems that we as Members of this body will have to cope with.
