Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970210670

This state visit is surely an auspicious event for both our nations. two great republics. two democratic states. two societies which share so many things and yet are different in so many ways. Our relations are seemingly fated to rise and fall in public perceptions even though there is in fact a basic continuum. One of the facts that attach us one to the other. more in this time than has ever been the case in the past. is the very large number of citizens of the South Asian subcontinent. of India in particular. who have immigrated to the United States. This is not a new immigration. The Indians began to arrive many years ago. They came first to the home State of the distinguished Presiding Officer .
