Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970200856

Mr. President. the Senate may soon consider S. 2222. the "Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1982." This bill represents a major effortin which I have joinedto achieve long overdue reform of our Nations immigration laws. Despite every effort to fashion a consensus on this legislation. I was forced to vote against tho bill in the Judiciary Committee because of the serious reservations I have about It in its present form. I sought to address these concerns through a series of amendments I offered over a 2month period during the subcommittees and the full committees consideration of the bill. I intend to pursue these amendments when the bill comes to the Senate floor.
