Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970194180

Mr. Speaker. on June 15. the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision and ruled that Texas taxpayers have an obligation to pay for the education of illegal aliens. There have been many poor decisions in the history of the Supreme Court. but I believe this ruling is among the very worst. Without doubt. this ruling sets one of the most dangerous precedents in the history of the Court. The very idea that Texas taxpayers have a duty to provide a free public education to illegal aliens is both outrageous and ludicrous. Parents who are in America illegally may demand a free education for their children. but in no way at all do they have a right to one. Unfortunately. this kind of attitudethat the ability to demand something somehow gives one a right to itis pervasive in Washington today.
