Our main purpose in proposing this resolution was to bring the desperate plight of Ethiopian exiles to the attention of the State Department. Here I feel we have succeeded. Recent talks with highlevel State Department officials have given me confidence that we will soon see significant steps to relieve the threat of deportation now facing thousands of Ethiopians. I have been pleased by the State Departments response to our appeal. and look forward to seeing this problem resolved very soon. There is little doubt that the Marxist regime of Colonel Mengistu is one of the most barbaric in the world.
