Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970189286

Writing in the New York Times. James Reston said. This immigration from the south has already reached the point that the Spanishspeaking people will soon be the most numerous minority in the United States and they are now beginning to demand not only equal rights. which is fair enough. but separate rights for the education of their children in the Spanish language .... The Latin immigration. and what happens in the vote about independence for the province of Quebec. in the end could be more important to the future of this hemisphere than Iran or Afghanistan. The separatist sentiment in the Province of Quebec was triggered. I am sure. by the American Civil Rights movement. in which an aggrieved black minority dramatically protested the injustices of the past and present.
