As an addendum to the article. I should point out that as amended in the Judiciary Committee. S. 2222 would allow illegal aliens to become legalized if they are in this country before January 1. 1982. This means. in effect. that this law will reward the illegal behavior of those who cross the line without benefit of permit. passport. or anything else and just slip across the border despite our Border Patrol. I understand why they do this. I understand profoundly the needs of labor. especially in the Western States. that cause this flow. but I do not believe that they should be rewarded for this illegal behavior by endowing them with the right to live here permanently and then after a few years to become citizens. despite the fact of their illegal entry.
