Speaker. 40 years ago this week. the Soviet Union invaded the Baltic countries of Lithuania. Latvia. and Estonia. A year later. in 1941. the Soviet Union conducted a reign of terror on the people of these countries by jailing them. executing them outright or deporting them to Siberia and other hostile areas of the eastern Soviet Union. The Soviet Union continued these atrocities from 1944 to 1949. As a free democratic nation we must not forget that in 1918. these three nations fought and won a war of independence against the Soviet Union. declared themselves to be independent of Russian rule. and proclaimed themselves free again after centuries of foreign domination.
