Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970188261

I wish to join my colleagues in remembering Genocide Day. a tragic day in world history. but one that must not be forgotten. Specifically. Genocide Day marks the Soviet Unions invasion and takeover of the Baltic StatesEstonia. Latvia. and Lithuaniabeginning on June 14. 1940. As part of that takeover. thousands of the Baltic people were executed and over a million were deported to slave labor camps in Siberia and other parts of the Soviet Union. As one who has long sought to obtain basic freedoms for all people throughout the world. I fully support the commemoration of Genocide Day as an important reminder of the suffering that was initiated in the Baltic States some 40 years ago. and which. sadly. continues today.
