In 1931. in the midst of the Depression. the family decided to move to Russia in search of a better life. But the familys dreams were shortly thereafter shattered. Five years after returning to the Soviet Union. his father disappeared in the Stalin purges of 1936. and a year after that. his mother and older sister were arrested and sent to Siberia where they both died in concentration camps. His younger sister. Eva. survived the war and emigrated to Israel in 1972. After serving on the front line in World War II. Abe Stolar settled in Moscow and got a job as a radio announcer.
