Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970162361

Speaker. last Sunday. May 2. was celebrated around the United States as Solidarity Sunday for Soviet Jewry. I would like to take this occasion to speak out in support of Soviet Jews and all Soviet people who want to emigrate from the Soviet Union or practice their religion with the freedom we in the United States take for granted. In 1979. 51.320 exit visas were granted to Soviet Jews. In 1981. the number fell to 9.447. Besides the drastic decrease in the number of exit visas granted. we can only guess at the number denied. The Soviet Union is filled with prisoners of conscience. re-
