Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157759

I believe that we must get some movement toward the reduction and elimination of Turkish forces on Cyprus over a period of time. Of course. there may have to be NATO or U.N. guarantees for the security of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot citizens. It is in no ones interest. except the Soviets. to have intercommunal violence return to Cyprus. I believe that we should work with the Greek. Turkish. and Cypriot Governments to alleviate the refugee problem on Cyprus and eliminate nonU.N. forces on that island nation. A successful resolution of this problem will add stability and security to southern Europe and the Middle East. and will repair a weakness in the vital NATO alliance. Thank you.
