April 24 is a day of mourning for Armenians the world over. This date marks the 67th anniversary of the systematic effort by Ottoman Turks to exterminate the Armenian Christian community within their country. In 1915. Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Turkey were murdered. Over the next several years. the entire Armenian population in eastern Turkey were deported or killed in an attempt to obliterate te people. the religion. and the culturE of Armenia. Nevertheless. enough Arnenians survived to establish. after V irld War I. a Republic of Armenia. Urfortunately. this small and weakenet State fell only 2 years later to the Soviet Union.
