The Turkish invasion of this troubled island nation in 1974 resulted in many deaths and the disappearances of many island residents. including Andreas Kassapis. an American citizen living in Cyprus with his family at the time of the invasion. Andreas Kassapis fate is unknown to this day. along with hundreds of other Greek Cypriots who "disappeared" after the invasion. More than 200.000 Cypriots were forced from their homes to live as refugees in their own countrya tragic legacy of Turkeys illegal invasion. The United Nations Special Representative on Cyprus has spent many months negotating with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot representatives in an effort to bring about a settlement to the crisis. The United Nations has gone on record in calling for the removal of all Turkish troops and colonists as an essential first step to a Just and lasting peace.
