While it is highly commendable that the United States remains fully committed to assisting in achieving a settlement in Cyprus. giving its wholehearted support to the United Nations and the U.N. Secretary Generals Special Representative. Ambassador Hugo Gobbi. we must not lose sight of the fact that over 200.000 people continue to be displaced in their own land. This clearly perpetuates the human suffering of the refugees and families of individuals who have been missing since the Turkish occupation. in which the northern 36 percent of the island is still held in de facto partition that has separated the ethnic communities. Vigorous efforts must continue to establish a more effective vehicle in which to locate these missing individuals. The humanitarian concern cannot be overstated.
