Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970157297

I Join in sending the message that Members of Congress are extremely dissatisified with the 8year occupation by Turkish troops of 40 percent of Cyprus. I support the removal of Turkish troops from Cypriot soil and urge the adoption of a fair and enduring settlement that is acceptable to both sides. Until this happens. there will be a continuing weakening in NATOs southern flank. a continuing denial of selfdetermination for the Cypriot people. and an uncertain status for over 200.000 refugees that have been forced from their homes. It is absolutely wrong that the stationing of Turkish troops. resulting from their intervention in 1974. continues to this day. This action has constituted a massive violation of human rights.
