I am extremely pleased that the Senate has acted today to confirm the nominations of Stanley Marcus to be U.S. attorney for the southern district of Florida and Robert W. Merkle. Jr.. to be U.S. attorney for the middle district of Florida. I am proud that I was able to recommend to the President the nomination of two such capable and aggressive prosecutors to fill these vitally important positions in the State of Florida. As you may be aware. Florida has had its share of problems with crime. drug smuggling. and illegal immigration in recent months. I believe. however. that we have come to a turning point in those problems. and I am confident that men like Mr. Marcus and Mr.
