It is one of the tragedies of our time that the people of Cyprus have had to endure an 8year occupation of 40 percent of their country by Turkish troops. This illegal occupation is not only a tremendous burden of the Cypriot population. but it has created a significant refugee problem in Cyprus. with approximately 200.000 native Cypriots being forced from their homes and villages. Since 1974. the United Nations Special Representative has sought to resolve the overall problem in Cyprus. but to no avail. I believe that it is important for the U.S.
