Many people are in Soviet prisons today for the same reason as Anatoly Shehaansky: they are Jewish. The Shcharansky case. however. is Ihe archetype of repression against Soviet Jews. It Is the most glaring exarjiple to two characteristics of rep:ession Soviet style. First. the Soviets treatment of Shcharansky makes a mockery of the legal principles which they clism to adhere to. For example. the crackdown on Jewish emigration whith has occurred over the past year hati often been justified by a new Soviet law requiring a "firstdegree" relative residing in Israel. Shcharanskys wife. Avital. has lived in Israel since 1977.
