Mr. Speaker. for years I have followed with outrage the stepbystep deterioration of living conditions for Anatoly Shcharansky. This is the fifth anniversary of his imprisonment in the Soviet Union. and still Anatoly Shcharansky and thousands of other Soviet Jews refused visas are in prison. He is under a 13year sentence for crimes he did not commit. Indeed. his only offense is his desire to emigrate to Israel to join his wife. Since last we marked the anniversary of his imprisonment. conditions have worsened for Shcharansky. In the fall. he collapsed from hunger as a result of severe punishment and was hospitalized for 33 days.
