Jews have been singled out for particularly outrageous treatment. and their persecution has worsened in recent months. For Jews. emigration provides the only hope for freedom yet. according to one publication. by the end of 1981 emigration of Jews had been reduced by 82 percent over the previous 2 years. Anatoly Shcharansky is one of the most visible symbols of the Soviet Unions brutality. He is also a man who has faced extraordinary suffering.
