I am of course heartened that this brave womans period of intense agony in solitary confinement is about to come to a close. But for Ida Nudelwhose only crimes against the state were her unshakeable commitment to her Jewish faith and heritage and her compassion in caring for those who had been imprisoned by that stateher release from exile will only be a partial triumph. The triumph of Ida Nudel will be complete only when she is allowed to realize the goal that has sustained her through her confinement: The freedom to emigrate to Israel. to rejoin her sister. and to practice her faith in peace. It has been 11 years since Ida Nudel first challenged the Soviet authorities to allow her to leave. She has endured harassment. public abuse. andfor the last 4 yearsexile in Siberia.
