The daughter of a distinguished Baltimore rabbi. born in Baltimore on the eve of the Civil War. raised and educated there. Henrietta Szold was a person of high principles. great intelligence. and inexhaustible energy. with the rare and precious ability to translate principle into reality-"to dream things that never were. and say Why not." For the first 50 years of her life. she was an active and respected member of the Baltimore community. In the last decades of the 19th century. when homeless refugees from czar1st Russian oppression began to arrive in Baltimore. young Henrietta Szold established night classes to assist their adjustments to the new life in their adopted land. The public night schools of the city of Baltimore grew out of Henrietta Szolds classes. and served as a model for cities across the Nation.
