Malden. which was incorporated as a city on Ma. ih 31. 1881. actually dates back to 1619. when the town of Malden was established. Our community was one of the original sections of Ch~rlestown and one of the first settled regions of Massachusetts to separate from its mother town and create its own government. Malden takes its name from a community in Essex. England. Some of the most prominent of Maldens original citizens immigrated from that British town. As Malden grew in population over the years. however. the community welcomed immigrants from many other nations as well. Many of these new residents found Malden a refuge from religious and political persecution and from the economic hardship of their homelands. Today.
