Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970136399

Mr. President. we are all too familiar with the dismal status of the emigration of Soviet Jewry and the harsh. inhumane treatment they are subjected to within the Soviet Union. Thousands upon thousands of Soviet Jews are systematically and deliberately denied internationally recognized human rights. In the West. we are acquainted with only a handful of names of those who suffer in the U.S.S.R. Anatoly Shcharansky is one of those whose tragic personal history is fairly well known to us. The story of the courageous efforts mounted by Shcharansky to improve the respect for fundamental human freedoms in the U.S.S.R. has been told the world over.
