Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970124986

Mr. Chairman. this amendment seeks to reaffirm our commitment. to bringing about a peaceful solution. to the conflict in Cyprus. In 1974. Turkey invaded Cyprus with U.S.-supplied NATO armaments. As a result. over 200.000 Cypriots have been forced to live as refugees in their own homeland. Clearly. Turkey has proven itself a close ally and one of our most important partners in the southeastern flank of NATO. However. its unwarranted occupation of Cyprus had contributed to political hostilities in the Mediterranean which could adversely affect our strategic interests in the near future. Mr. Chairman. intercommunal negotiations have continued in Cyprus for 1 year under the direction of a special U.N.
