Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970124428

Mr. President. we need to regain control of our borders. For almost a decade the problem of illegal immigration has been "out of control" to use the phrase of former INS Commissioner Leonard Chapman. According to the Attorney General. illegal aliens are now coming at the rate of 1/2 to 2 million per year. Are we going to wait until foreign terrorists begin to practice their bloody trade here before we make the needed reforms to allow proper screening of entrants? Some evidence is already available indicating that unfriendly foreign governments are sending in agents. Without Question they are dumping common criminals on our shores as an article in yesterdays Washington Post demonstrates. We must remain generous to genuine refugees. but proper screening is necessary before any foreigner is allowed to enter our country. I ask that the story entitled "Americas New Bandidos: Flotilla Toughs" be printed in the RECORD.
