Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970104211

The Coast Guard is being asked by the Congress and the President to do more. not less. with its limited resources. The President has directed the Coast Guard to stop the flow of Haitian refugees now entering the United States by sea. Drug smuggling has become epidemic and the Coast Guard is expected to play an even stronger role in deterring this flourishing criminal activity. It is recognized that the protection of our coasts from smuggling activities has a direct bearing on our national security. Indeed. the U.S. Coast Guard is a multimission organization which is a key element in our Nations defense.
