The Soviet Union is committed to diametrically opposed principles. one set on paper. the other in practice. My hope as a private citizen (and I am sure that the hope is shared by all Americans and. indeed. by most citizens of the Soviet Union) is that the better angels of the Russian spirit will win out over the worse. In particular. and at the very least. we would hope for the free religious liberty and free right to emigration on the part of all Soviet citizens. There are many groups of Soviet citizens who do not. in fact. enjoy complete religious tolerance and normal religious liberty. Bibles have been confiscated. religious meetings interrupted. religious leaders beaten. punished. and thrown in jail. and complicated schemes of penalties attached to those who insist upon religious belief and practice.
