Mr. Speaker. I am today introducing. at the request of the Reagan administration. the immigration reform proposal that has been submitted by the Department of Justice. This legislative package is the product of a several month interagency task force review of the recommendations made by the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy. I had the privilege of serving on the Select Commission and I am pleased that many of the positive recommendations. that were contained in the final report of our panel. are included in some form in this legislation. I am particularly pleased that the administration saw the wisdom of presenting its legislative response to the many difficult and controversal issues relating to our immigration policy in the form of a comprehensive legislative package. Most of the commissioners who served on the Select Commission clearly recognized that these subjects are not easily divisible. They must be considered and debated in concert to produce meaningful and acceptable legislation.
