I have heard from several people who visited the Elberts. and were unceremoniously taken in for questioning as a result. One of these visitors commented that the Soviet authorities repeatedly asked him why an American Congressman was interested in the Elberts. I know that every Member of this body would answer that question in the same manner: as long as freedom of worship and the freedom to emigrate are denied anywhere in the world. then all Americans will join in the struggle to guarantee these basic human rights. I am very proud that Lev Elbert calls me his friend. I pledge to speak out on his behalf as long as necessary.*
