On April 5. 1831. the Right Reverend Francis Patrick Kenrick. coadjutor bishop of Philadelphia and future archbishop of Baltimore. together with Rev. John Hughes. future archbishop of New York. and six laymen incorporated St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church of the Northern Liberties and Kensington. The original parish boundaries encompassed onethird of the present city of Philadelphia. These dedicated and courageous men represented hundreds of fellow immigrants who would work for. sacrifice for. pray for. and dream about a church in which they could freely worship God. educate their children. and center their parish and community life.
