In that time. three generations of Concannons have run the winery. First there was James. born in Ireland in 1847. A selfeducated immigrant. he got into winemaking through friendship with San Franciscos first archbishop. producing sacramental wines originally. then expanding into the premium table wine field. His son Joseph carried on. followed by Josephs sons Joseph Jr. and James. "It should be no surprise that wines often reflect the character of the people producing them." wrote wine columnist Richard Paul Hinkle in a September 1979 edition of the San Francisco Examiner. thus beginning a column about the Concannon Vineyard. He characterized the Concannons as people of "defined character" who produce wines "of definition." Speaking of the wines being made today.
