A wealthy Swedish businessman. Mr. Wallenberg could have spent the war relaxing at his home. Instead. he voluntarily stepped forward. and at great risk to himself and with the support his own Government. took on a perilous mission in Budapest. His efforts received moral and financial backing from the U.S. War Refugee Board. which was established by President Roosevelt in 1944 to try to save the lives of Jews threatened during the holocaust. Mr. Wallenberg disappeared in 1945 into the hands of Soviet officials in Hungary. and to this day the Swedish Government has not received a satisfactory explanation of his whereabouts.
