It strikes at the most basic requirement of all who share the human conditionrespect for human life and liberty. and the obligation to preserve and protect innocent life. Simple justice dictates clearly the actions we are required to take. We must continue to press for what is humane and justfor the quick medical treatment of Anatoly Shcharansky in his illness. and for his subsequent release and free emigration to Israel. We must do so not only because Anatoly Shcharansky is a symbol of a movement whose values we share. but more importantly because he is a member of the human family. whose triumph and sufferings we also share.
