Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970074310

Mr. Speaker. the subject of American refugee policy. particularly with reference to people from Southeast Asia. has been a controversial one. Several Members of this body and other public figures have spoken out in favor of restricting the entry of the Southeast Asian exiles to America. I was very pleased to read a recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal expressing strongly the view that America continues to have an obligation to those who were the victims of the war in Indochina. Mr. Speaker. I do not think we should begrudge to those unfortunate people the chance to join the tens of millions of earlier immigrants who have come to this country and helped it grow and prosper. I am very pleased that the Wall Street Journal has spoken out so forcefully on this important issue and I wish to share its views with the membership. [From the Wall Street Journal. Aug. 24. 1981)
