Turkey used the shortlived coup against the legitimate Cyprus Government by the military junta then ruling Greece as a pretext to invade Cyprus. Turkey did not stop the fighting until it had occupied 40 percent of the island. an area still under Turkish control 7 years later. Since 1974. 200.000 Cypriots have been refugees in their own land and Turkey has since exported 60.000 of its own citizens to the occupied area in an effort to change the cultural and political character of Cyprus. This situation has become a threat. not only to the stability of the eastern Mediterranean area. but also to a strong NATO and the security of the United States. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation. the United Nations has led the move to settle the problem.
