After World War II. he was offered a heated apartment. food. and better working conditions if he would accept Communist Party membership and compose a symphony for Lenin. He rejected the offer and was tailed and tormented. Fellow Hungarian music leaders rejected him because he renounced his citizenship in Sovietdominated Hungary. After 20 years of oppression (living day to day as a casual worker not permitted to compose professionally). he was allowed into the United States under a special immigration law reserved for outstanding European scientists and artists. This was a great tribute to Mr. Hegedus. who was the first Hungarian to enter the United States under this special law.
