Peter and Augustina Vashchenkos determination to raise their children according to their religious beliefs resulted in 16 years of separation. persecution. and repression. Finally. in June 1978. the Vashchenko family received the necessary invitation to immigrate to the United States. However. they were refused the necessary papers at three separate visa offices. The families sixth and final venture to the Embassy in Moscow was prompted by this newest injustice. Accompanied by Maria Chmykhalov. and her son.
