Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970041802

Mr. President. more and more news reports reveal that all too many illegal immigrants in the United States are not only taking away jobs from American citizens but are also becoming an increasing burden on the welfare system. Los Angeles County. Calif.. has even gone to the extreme of suing the Federal Government for millions in unpaid medical bills for illegal aliens. James Reston of the New York Times. in fact. has called illegal immigration and all of the burdens that it is creating "one of the most complicated human and political problems before the Nation." A recent article by reporter Mary Elson in the Chicago Tribune expresses some of my concerns about the welfare system becoming a haven for illegal aliens. Mr. President. in order to share this excellent journalistic piece with my colleagues.
