Mr. Speaker. during the closing years of World War II. the Nazis were desperately trying to kill off all the Jews left in Hungary. Hundreds of families were driven from their houses and deported to death camps. never again to see their homeland. In mid1944. Raoul Wallenberg. a nonJew and member of a leading family of bankers and industrialists. was sent to Budapest by the Swedish Government. On this lifesaving mission. Wallenberg printed thousands of Swedish passports. established "safe houses" which served as havens for countless Hungarian citizens and rescued many individuals from cattle cars bound for the infamous concentration camps.
