Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970039822

Mr. Speaker. today we commemorate the 41st anniversary of the forcible Soviet occupation of Lithuania and the Soviet deportation of more than 35.000 innocent Lithuanians to Siberian concentration camps. an action from which few of those deported survived. Since the illegal Soviet occupation of Lithuania. the issue of Soviet violation of Lithuanian human rights. and the struggle of the Lithuanian people to extricate their nation from Soviet subjugation have dominated the history of this Baltic nation. The continued Soviet harassment and persecution of Lithuanians. and the unrelenting efforts of the Lithuanian people to regain their right to selfdetermination must never go unnoticed by the United States.
