Mr. Speaker. this month. June 14 to be precise. marks the 40th anniversary of one of the cruelest human endeavors ever perpetrated by one government upon the citizens of another country. I am referring to the forced deportation of thousands of Latvians. Lithuanians. and Estonians from their homelands in June 1941. and subsequent dispersal of these peoples to all corners of the Soviet empire. in many cases to the forced labor camps of Siberia. These nations. Mr. Speaker. had been free and prosperous since the end of World War I. to say nothing of their national and cultural identities that have existed for centuries.
